American Sign Language Certificate

With the American Sign Language (ASL) Certificate in Temple’s College of Public Health, you will develop intermediate-level skills in the widely used language of the deaf in the U.S. and Canada. You will also learn about American Deaf culture and gain valuable insight for future encounters with individuals who are deaf in professional and social contexts. This certificate program allows you to build preliminary skills in sign language for additional education in ASL-to-English translation, interpretation or education of individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired.  

This sign language certificate is particularly useful for students majoring in

  • anthropology;
  • cognitive science;
  • education;
  • English;
  • neuroscience;
  • speech, language and hearing science; and
  • psychology.

Program Format

This certificate can only be earned by students pursuing undergraduate degrees at Temple.

广发娱乐首页The certificate consists of four courses, sequenced to cover ASL levels one through four. You will also examine deaf culture and history in a global framework, as well as the genetic and social factors related to deafness in select communities.

广发娱乐首页You will take a total of 12 academic credits to fulfill the certificate. The first two classes may be taken at an Honors level.
